Postponed means that the issue was either a feature request or something that requires major refactoring on our side. Since that makes the issue not actionable in the close future we choose to close it as Postponed and add it on our internal roadmaps and technical debt pages instead.

[Linux][Denoising] Unity crashes due to running out of memory when baking Lightmaps

Progressive Lightmapper

-

Reproduction steps:
1. Download and open the attached project: "AC_Hydrocarbons.zip"
2. Go to Window > Rendering > Lighting
3. Press Generate Lighting

Expected result: The Lightmaps are baked without issue
Actual result: Midway through baking Lightmaps Unity crashes. It also causes a temporary freeze of the whole system.

Reproducible with: 2019.4.31f1, 2020.3.20f1, 2021.1.25f1, 2021.2.0b15, 2022.1.0a12

Notes:
- Tested on Ubuntu 18.04 with a GTX1060 (6GB VRAM)
- The crash occurs with both OpenGL and Vulkan Graphics API
- The project could not load on Windows, it would hang midway through
- Not reproducible on macOS
- Reproducible with CPU and GPU Lightmappers

  1. Resolution Note (2022.1.X):

I'm postponing this bug, since for the time being there is a workaround for the user (use CPU lightmapper) and we are currently working on a new design (the Lightbaker) that will reduce the memory pressure during denoising by unloading first the lighting data when doing the compositing.
