No
Root gameobject properties cannot be renamed in the animator window
Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new project
2. Create a Parent gameObject and Child GameObject
3. Add an animator component on the parent object
4. Add properties for the child object and parent object
5. Attempt to change the names of properties (with F2)
Expected result: both parent and child properties can be renamed
Actual result: only child properties can be renamed
Reproduced on 5.5.4p2, 5.6.3p2, 2017.1.1p3, 2017.2.0f1, 2017.3.0b1
Notes:
-If name is deleted entirely, it becomes uneditable
-While the gameobject always needs to match the name of the property, copying an animation may break the link. Therefore a name change may be needed for the properties

Incredible! We are in 2024 (on unity 2022.3.17f1) and the problem still persist!

Resolved 'By design' ?
So lame option for that kind of limitation.
'By lazyness' we should read instead.
