Non 3d icons vanishes if gizmo scaling is turned completely down.
- open unity
- in scene view turn the gizmo scale slider all the way down, disable 3d icons from same menu. No gizmos are shown
- raise the scale a few milimetres, turn 3d icons off icons are shown
