I logged this bug as well. It seems to crash *less if when you want to start and stop, you hit stop first. Then disconnect from Unity, then you can close holographic on the HoloLens if you want and then do that in reverse. It still crashes occasionally but it is much better.

With Unity 2017.4.1f1 and MRTK 2017.2.1.4 I have the same issue. It occurs probably on some constellation of settings, so the crash occurs 100% of the time (yet). This also occurs just when starting off with barebone elements in Unity. Maybe the turning event for me was when I started to use the function in Menu: Mixed Reality Toolkit/Configure/Apply Mixed Reality Project Settings, however I guess it's unlikely.
I didn't find a workaround to that bug. Even if the HoloLens device is shut off, the Holographic tab shows it is still connected. So when clicking that button while the icon is green, the crash occurs immediately. One time it also gave me an error message regarding memory issues.
Also seems like older Versions of Unity (2017.2.0f3 and 2017.2.2f1) struggle as well.

5.6.1f1
Connect Hololens remotely.
Allow Hololens to go to sleep.
Console warning appears every X seconds that it cannot connect.
Click disconnect in the Holographic Emulation window.
Crash and enjoy forgetting to save your scene...
